Help nesting birds
Helping birds with nesting materials is not only a way to help support breeding populations, but also a great way to further engage with their seasonal rhythms.
The months birds most need support with nest building material are March, April and May. But It’s a good idea to start saving feathers and pet hairs through the year, so you have them for next spring. Some species such as pigeons and doves, nest year-round.
Materials you can provide for nesting birds:
- Twigs and sticks
- Dead leaves
- Grass clippings and dead grass
- Yarn, wool, string, cotton
- Dog or cat grooming hair, and human hair
- Feathers, both their own and other birds
- Lawn moss, lichen and moss from roofs
- Pine needles
- Straw and other plant stems
- Cotton wool
Create a ‘Hair Port’ or ‘Feather Station’ by leaving nesting material out for birds by stuffing dog hair or sheep wool in a fat ball or nut/seed feeder. You can also leave materials from the list above in piles around the yard. Or hang it from trees or loosely place feathers in a mesh feeder or in a wide mesh bag. Try several different methods to find the best option for your garden.
Things to avoid
Steer clear of material treated with pesticides or fertilizers, including grass that has had lawn care products.
Don’t use pet hair if it has been treated for fleas. Cut hair into small lengths of 1cm as long hair can cause injury to the birds.
Ensure string or yarn is made of natural materials such as wool or cotton, and that it’s cut into small lengths no more than 7cm long to avoid the birds getting their feet or heads caught in the loop.
Do not use plastic string or fishing line, these are likely cause harm to the birds.
Other ways to help nesting birds
- Providing nest sites on buildings if you live in an urban area.
- Providing nest sites and boxes in gardens.
- Plant trees or bushes so that birds can forage leaves or twigs as nesting materials.
- Avoid cutting down trees and bushes in the spring and summer. Wait until autumn and winter, once the breeding season has finished.
- Keep pets indoors for a few days if you see fledgling birds in your garden.
- Provide feeding stations and water for the birds in your garden.
